Scaring up some votes: 23 entries in Chamber contest

The Oconee County Chamber of Commerce is still accepting votes from the public on their favorite scarecrow entered in the chamber’s first scarecrow-making contest. The scarecrows were put on the display last Saturday at the annual Oconee Chamber Fall Festival in the downtown area and runners in the Scarecrow 5K were allowed to vote on their favorite. There were 23 entries in the contest, said Tammy Gilland, who coordinated the contest. “We hope to make it an annual tradition as part of the festival and the Scarecrow 5K,” she said. Ferguson’s touchdown in OT lifts Athens Academy past George Walton 29-26

It was a game that Athens Academy senior Ed Ferguson described as “unbelievable.” When the fourth quarter ended in Friday night’s game against George Walton, the Spartans were celebrating but it wasn’t because they won. Drew Byus kicked a game-tying 43-yard field goal to tie the game at 23-23 to send the game into overtime. After the Bulldogs took a 26-23 lead on their first possession of overtime, the Spartans got a 1-yard touchdown run by Ferguson to get the 29-26 win and start off a celebration on the field with their fellow students. “That was unbelievable.
