Scaring up some votes: 23 entries in Chamber contest

The Oconee County Chamber of Commerce is still accepting votes from the public on their favorite scarecrow entered in the chamber’s first scarecrow-making contest. The scarecrows were put on the display last Saturday at the annual Oconee Chamber Fall Festival in the downtown area and runners in the Scarecrow 5K were allowed to vote on their favorite. There were 23 entries in the contest, said Tammy Gilland, who coordinated the contest. “We hope to make it an annual tradition as part of the festival and the Scarecrow 5K,” she said. Athens Academy advances to Final Four of state volleyball tournament

Athens Academy is headed back to the Final Four of the Class A state volleyball tournament. The Lady Spartans needed all five sets but when their third-round match against Wesleyan was over on Saturday afternoon, the Lady Spartans were celebrating their 3-2 win to qualify for the semifinals for a second straight season.
