The message from the state Department of Transportation to about two dozen Oconee residents at a meeting last week about the proposed road improvements to US 441 through Bishop and the south end of the county came down to a simple shrug of the shoulders. Athens Academy heading to the Elite Eight

Both the Athens Academy Lady Spartans and Spartans got a bye in the first round of the Class A state soccer tournament. The Spartans opened Tuesday night at home against Atkinson County and the Lady Spartans opened Wednesday afternoon against Savannah Country Day, and both teams came away with 1-0 victories to advance to this weekend’s Elite Eight. “It feels good because the bracket is set up for us to do well, but you have to play the games,” said Lady Spartans head coach Steve Stewart. “We don’t see the No. 1 team until the finals and we have already…
