Alexa Phillips and Paris Phillips were back in town on Monday to compete at Stegeman Coliseum. The Phillips twins, both sophomores at North Carolina State, competed against the University of Georgia and they were both cheered loudly by fans in the sold-out arena. “It was cool having the support system out here because my club gym is here, my friends and my family are here. WCA girls get homecoming victory over Peachtree Academy Standard

Homecoming for Westminster Christin Academy was six days later than it was originally supposed to be because of the predicted winter storm on January 7, but on Friday night against Peachtree Academy, several alumni from WCA showed up for Homecoming. The Lady Lions picked up a 47-32 win against the Lady Panthers while the Lions came up just short, falling 54-50 to the Panthers. Sallie Schutz didn’t have a 3-pointer in the game but she went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and finished with 22 points against a physical Peachtree squad. Athens Academy’s girls’ middle school basketball team and Prince Avenue Christian’s boys’ middle school basketball team both remained undefeated in the league after coming away with wins against their rivals on Wednesday at the Spartan Center. On Tuesday afternoon at the fieldhouse, North Oconee High School introduced Tyler Aurandt as its new head football coach. Aurandt takes over for Terry Tuley, who resigned following the 2016 season after 11 seasons at the helm of the Titans’ football program. “I am very blessed to be here. I have had the opportunity to work with a lot of great people and they helped me move to this point in my career,” Aurandt said. Quint becomes ninth North Oconee player to score 1,000th career point Standard

In the second game of the Rome Holiday Classic last Thursday, North Oconee senior Matthew Quint became the ninth player from the basketball program to reach 1,000 career points when he scored 23 points in the Titans’ win against Armuchee. “I have seen past players get it and I have always had that mentality of getting it. Athens Academy girls open holiday tournament with win, Spartans fall in tournament opener Standard

In the opening night of the Athens Academy Holiday Tournament on Thursday evening, the Lady Spartans held off East Jackson to win 42-40. The Spartans had a strong third quarter but a big first half by Elbert County helped push the Blue Devils past the Spartans 57-36. The tournament continues for Athens Academy on Friday with the Lady Spartans tipping off at 4 p.m. and the Spartans at 5:30 p.m. Both play against Strong Rock Christian. Oconee County head coach Jeanette Looney spent eight years coaching at Prince Avenue Christian School. She’s been at Oconee County for eight years and has been head coach of the Lady Warriors in each of the last four years. Wednesday afternoon at the George Walton Academy Holiday Classic was her first time coaching against Prince Avenue Christian and her former counterpart Richard Ricketts, and the Lady Warriors used a 12-3 run in the third quarter to beat the Lady Wolverines 44-22. Oconee County’s and Prince Avenue Christian’s boys’ basketball teams played a close contest on Wednesday afternoon in the George Walton Academy Holiday Classic with the Warriors coming away with a 52-47 win against the Wolverines. The Warriors led 8-5 after the first quarter and 21-20 at halftime. Going into the fourth quarter, the Warriors led 34-32. Athens Academy senior Ali Garrett will be heading to Pennsylvania for college. She signed last month with Lehigh University, located in Bethlehem, Pa., to continue her volleyball career. “I am really excited. I have known I am going there for a couple of months now. Getting it down on paper is really exciting and gratifying,” Garrett said. “I really liked the school academically and the area and the vibe of the school.
